International Women’s Day (IWD) is a critical reminder of our collective journey towards gender equality and the importance of advocating for women’s rights and representation. This day holds a special place in my heart, as it resonates with my own journey of resilience and empowerment, writes Hacia Atherton, founder of Empowered Women in Trades.

In 2017, my life took an unexpected turn due to a severe accident that reshaped my path. This experience, while challenging, ignited a profound journey of self-discovery and strength.

I transformed trauma into triumph, drawing inspiration from my passion for positive psychology and my extensive corporate experiences. Today, I am dedicated to empowering individuals and championing the incredible influence of positive psychology in the corporate landscape supporting leaders to thrive.

My signature is authenticity, my style is elegance with attitude, and courage is my driving force.

As the founder and CEO of Empowered Women In Trades (EWIT), my mission is to champion gender diversity and create environments where women can thrive in skilled trades. I believe that embracing gender diversity is crucial for driving innovation, economic growth, and fostering inclusive workplace cultures. Diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas are essential for sparking creativity and innovation.

Encouraging more women to enter skilled trades can tap into the full talent pool, address labour shortages, and drive economic growth.

The economic benefits of gender diversity are clear, but its importance extends beyond financial gains. Promoting gender diversity is vital for improving workplace cultures within skilled trades and related industries. Inclusive environments that value and support women attract top talent, enhance employee morale, and reduce turnover rates.

To create more inclusive and supportive environments for women in skilled trades, organisations must implement strategic initiatives and strategies that foster psychological safety and high levels of psychological wellbeing onsite.

These efforts should focus on breaking down barriers, providing mentorship opportunities, and fostering a sense of belonging among women in these industries.

On this International Women’s Day, as we embrace the theme “Count Her In,” I am reminded of the importance of including women in all aspects of our society, especially in fields where they have been historically underrepresented. Through EWIT, I am an unwavering advocate for amplifying the voices of women in skilled trades. With EWIT, I envision a future where women not only thrive but lead the way in these fields, creating a balanced workforce that celebrates their contributions.

International Women’s Day is not just a day to acknowledge women’s achievements but also a call to action to continue pushing for gender equality and inclusivity in all sectors, including skilled trades. Together, we can create a world where every woman’s potential is recognised, valued, and celebrated.
